Failed Smog Check S70 1998

Failed the smog check. Test indicated monitors for catalyst, EGR system, oxygen sensor heater & second air system were not ready. Volvo says because my battery went completely dead is the reason. When this happens, something (codes-?) are erased and then need to be rebooted(?) in order to pass inspection. Needs to be rebooted by some machine, then driven for about 45 minutes. This sounds crazy to me! Any advice would be helpful.

I thought someone else would mention the troublesome news. I have a '98 S70GLT. Last year at smog check time I found this is a common problem with that car--also happens to some years of Ford products. The Volvo dealer will provide a brochure with a drive sequence that 'USUALLY" resets the codes. It is a big hassle.
I understand that some jurisdictions not only know about the problem, but will allow a tailpipe probe test. Unfortunately my state is not such a jurisdiction. Take your brick to a Volvo shop that knows about the problem for the smog test. Don't bother with one of the generic shops.

I believe it takes a couple of cold starts to recycle the system. When the battery is disconnected you will loose all codes including the radio.

What do you mean by a couple of cold starts to recycle the system. The battery died about 2 months ago. I just failed the smog check Saturday. Is this something I have to take it to Volvo or a mechanic for?

I believe and ODBII code reader can reset the readiness monitors. Odd that they would not be "ready" after two months though.

Who knows, you may have pending codes waiting, or codes period withoug the MIL on. If the MIL (aka check engine light) is burnt out, your car could be throwing a bunch of codes and you would not know unless you had the reader hooked up to it. Bring it to Autozone, and they will read the codes for free.

If they find anything, post back here and let us know what was found, and we can go from there. If no codes are found, ask them if they can reset the readiness monitors.

Agreed that 2 mo. is a long time to not have all the ready monitors set. What are your driving habbits?

Most I drive is to/from work, 15 miles each way. I do drive on a freeway but with commuter traffic not very fast. Fastest I go is 75mph and for bursts of a minute or two. Do you think if I take it out on a stretch of highway in a remote area and let it go consistently at say 85mph for about 10-15 minutes, it might re-code everything? That's what I've been hearing might work.

And yes, I will try Autozone and see what they say.

Your speed will not matter. Key is total mile driven. Should reset by about 50 miles I believe.
