Procedure to R&R thermostat is clear on both web sites. Why is it necessary to drain the coolant? Maybe for environmental reasons I could let an expert do this.

        Can reuse coolant S70 1998

Before changing the thermostat, drain the coolant and in theory you can save it for reuse if the coolant is less than 2 years old. By drianing the coolant you prevent the spill when the tstat housing is removed.

Otherwise replace the coolant as well.

You really don't need to drain the coolant if you don't want to. Just keep in mind that when you remove the thermostat housing you will lose the coolant out of the upper hose and there really isn't a good way to control it. It's just messy. If you do it this way just use a couple cups of water when your done to rinse the coolant off the engine. Maybe not the most enviro friendly way of doing it, but..
