How do I reset /read 'check engine' light in '97 850 turbo?

We loaned the '97 850 to a friend and she's getting a check engine light. It's NOT the service light. She says it seems to run fine; she's NOT mechanically inclined, but should notice if it's drastically off.

Is there a way I can reset it or check it for codes? The only info I can find is for the earlier 850 models. I'm going to run down to take a look at it tomorrow, but hate to just look and agree that the light is on.

Thanks for any help

97 should be OBDII - the bad news is you need a reader, the good news is that some auto parts stores will do it for you for free - e.g. AutoZone. Call around - I would think someone in your area would do it.

Harbor Freight sells one that can read codes and clear them for about $45. To get one that can display sensor readings will cost about $200. There are some Volvo specific codes that won't show up with some OBD II readers.

Thanks. I can borrow the car back and run over to an autozone. Are there any standard resets that can be done once I have the code(s)?

Some of the OBDII readers have a "clear codes" ability--talk to whoever pulls the codes for you.

Disconnect the battery will clear the codes BUT you will need the radio code and the clock will need to be reset
