HOLY COW!!! Its not the control module! 850 1997

Hi everybody
I work at a volvo specialty shop and we have a car we are completely stumped by. Its a 97 850 non turbo w/ tracs.
Came in for abs/tracs lights on the dash. We checked the wheelspeed sensor with a voltmeter and they seemed ok so we popped in a control module. (He also had one put in at the dealer a few months earlier which didn't help him.)
We thought he might have gotten a faulty one from the dealer.
Lights were still on. We scanned it while driving and the Left rear wheel speed sensor was losing signal occasionally while going over bumps with the brake pedal down causing the abs to go crazy. The L and R come as a kit
so we replaced both rear wheelspeed sensors.
Problem is still there. Pump is not leaking either and all four pin wheels are ok. Don't see any bent or broken pins on any of the connector either.

Has anyone seen this before?
there are no other symptoms either.
hoping for some help
thanks in advance

On my car I replaced the ignition wires. After that my ABS/tracs was screwy.
Never thinking the ignition wires would cause this I went straight to the abs control unit diagnosing / checking wires and so on.
Finally before thinking about sending the module in I changed out the ignition wires with the orignals and everything was back to normal.
Ask you customer if they replaced the ignition wires recently (or around the time when things were failing)

    Simular situation. 850 1997

Just had Vic Rocha rebuild my ABS control module and when I put it back on the ABS light was still on. The local Volvo dealer had confirmed that the wheel sensors were all good prior to the control module rebuild. Long story short, the power wires to the ABS pump had defective insulation and were intermittently shorting out and blowing fuse 9 (if I remember correctly). I wasn't looking for that fuse with the ABS as that is on fuse 15. (I'm sure if the fuse numbers are incorrect someone will correct me.) I replaced just the pump from a junk yard find and after replacing the proper fuse the ABS warning light has not been back on, and the system is working as designed.

Since a plastic cover covers the pump, it was difficult to determine that the wiring insulation was defective. If you can get the cover off without destroying it, check the insulation on the wiring.

    Good hunting.

Have you monitored the offending sensor with an oscilloscope? It has been awhile but I have seen them in the past where the pulse wheel was damaged and caused a screwy wave form. Take a look at the "picture" that your sensors are making and see if you can make a diagnosis from there.

but if that were the problem wouldn't it be reading poorly all the time?
      not just intermittently?

      thanks for the reply

thanks everybody for the help but we found it and it was to simple to even put into words. After scrutinizing every inch of wire and every ground and every component of the ABS & TRACS system following a wiring diagram it turned out to be something simple. It looks as though somebody had been into the wires behind the dash (probably to do an a/c evap) and i guess the were too rough with the connector back there. One of the pins on the connector was disloged by 1.5mm (we measured it because we were shocked!). So when the car hit a bump it wiggled the connector just enough to lose signal to the LR wheel speed sensor.
I hope this helps anybody who may have this problem in the future

        thanks again for the input
