timing belt replacement 850

What kind of cost range could I expect to pay for the replacement of my timing belt(97 850)? I like to do and have the facilities to do but it seems like the kind of job that is best contracted out.

$200 for the belt change $400+ if you use a dealer. If you are at 140,000 miles add $140 for a new hydraulic tensioner no extra labor. It can be a DIY project if you have a warm and WELL lit garage.

Its not a hard task to do yourself if you have the tools and 2 hours to tackle the job including changing the Aux belt. Bay 13 did a nice job laying out the steps. Regarding outsourcing it, the Volvo quotes were wild. The lowest in NJ was $351.70 and they quoted 1.5 hours. The worst was $1,200 and 12 hours. Its obviously a big money maker where I live.

i just re-read and ingested the bay13 info and looked around in the engine bay and wonder if it would be a good idea to remove the serpentine belt tensioner assembly and also the power steering pump back and out of the way to have a little better look into the timing belt area?

Nah, you don't need to. Two tough parts about the timing belt change on the 850 are:

          1. Serpentine belt tensionser
          2. Getting the old belt off the crank damper

Regarding the first... my father's 95 GLT has the tensioner with a square recess that is too deep for my regular rachet to fit in (rachet fit in my 92 960 perfectly). Volvo has a tool for this, but I eventually put a small piece of an iron strip diagonally in the square recess, and turned it by gripping the iron strip with a large vise-grip. There's not much clearance between the tensioner and the strut tower, so getting a tool in there is a big difficult.

Getting the belt off the damper was difficult because there is a small tab by the bottom of the damper that leaves just enough clearance for the thickness of the belt. You have to twist the belt so that it fits through that small gap, and then pull it clear. Installation was no problem though. Another way is to remove the damper, but I didn't want to risk rotating the crank and messing up the timing.

Total time to replace the 850 belt was about 1-1/2 hour. The 960 took 30 minutes, mainly because neither of these problems are present on the RWD.

The belt itself is ~$35 from FCPGroton, and a new serpentine belt was ~$22... get a large C-clamp (6") for $10 to compress the hydraulic tensioner, and maybe $20 for a set of jack stands, and you're good to go.

I just had mine replaced here in the Rochester, NY area by Universal Imports for $280.00. The local Volvo dealer wanted $320.00 for the same job.

I live in Boston and use a Volvo specialty shop. It cost me about $450 to do the t-belt, tensioner, and also replace the serpentine belt. Unfortunately, living in the city I don't have a place to easily work on my car so I just suck it up and pay the shop.

Hey, it still beats payments on a new car.

Which shop in Boston ? I just had my 2nd t-belt, 2nd serp belt and t-belt tensioner changed in Dedham dealer for about $500.
