HELP!!! 1993 850 engine is different than 1994 and newer!

This sucks, I went to buy a used engine today for my 1993 850 Engine (s/n 133204} MFD date 5/93. Apparently the engines don't interchange for 1994 and newer - according to all the junkyards computer interchange systems, with no explanation. One did tell me he thought the intake man. was different but I think the s/n or build date is more important than the model year. I went to "THE VOLVO STORE" in "Winter Park" Florida for assistance in determining what engine is in this and pick up a rear main seal, and extra key, but was prompty rebuffed by the parts manager for wasting his time, "That's the way it is". What a a$$hole, I wanted to drag him over the counter and punch him out, but I left without the key and seal. I should have talked to a older mechanic I guess. I definately will never go there again and it's the only dealer in the Orlando area! What is different between 1993 and newer? I've found about 10 newer engines (cheap) and 1 1993 engine $$$.
Thanks

HELP!!! 1993 850 engine is different than 1994 and newer!

Talked to Eire parts in NY today no help on installing 1994 up motor. This engine fits 1993 ONLY! Went over to Volvo Service by Maitland Importers in Orlando - very knowledgable this is where you need to have your Volvo Seviced in Central Florida. I guess I'll stick with the 1993 engine, less problems but hard to findand more expensive, oh well. Found 2 yesterday with over 200k mi- way too many. I probably talked to more than 20 auto recyclers / service people today its possible to use a 1994 up engine but no one has done it all internals are the same mainly sensors, egr system, oil level sensor, and who knows what else it's alot easier to r and r complete engine. Picking up a 93, 87k mi for $850 with 6 month warranty tommorrow!

HELP!!! 1993 850 engine is different than 1994 and newer!

EVERYthing is more expensive for the 1993. I just had to put a new catalytic converter in mine for around 700.00. According to my indy, there were not enough 1993's made for Volvo to make a lot of parts that are available anywhere other than the dealer.

Such is life.

HELP!!! 1993 850 engine is different than 1994 and newer! 850 1993

The 850 was first marketed in Europe in 1992, the car was rushed to NA market as a MY1993. Basically, this is the vehcile we know in US & Canada as a 1993 850GLT. By the start of MY1994 production, many engineering and design changes had been incorporated into the car. Unfortunately, for the neophyte technician, it is not easy to keep track of the differences. As a previous owner of a 1993, (now own a 1996 850STD and a 1999 V70GLT), I have found that your best resource is a good dealership parts guy who understands customer service, and a broadband ISP for fast research using sites such as this one.

Good luck and happy holidays brickboard users!
