Rotor issues, V70 (T5), 2001 V70-XC70 2001

We bought a V70, T5, 2001, geartronic, Front wheel drive new and have had various issues, (Rear seat belt, Mass Air flow sensor, 2 ball joints, anti roll bar, peeling paint issues, squaking glove box and most recently 4 rotors replaced (47.000 miles, major vibration when braking), cooling fan replaced (49.000 miles). All repaired by an authorized Volvo dealer under warranty.

We now experience minor squeeking and vibration when braking (50.250 miles). The car is now out of warranty and a local garage specialized in Volvos shows us, that the left front rotor is waring un-equally (3000 miles after being replaced) and the brake pads are "questionable". It is now clear that the brake pads were NOT renewed at 47k miles when new rotors were put on....

Back at the authorized Volvo dealer (yet to make their own diagnosis): they mention that Volvo does not warrant rotors, if the pads are exchanged at the same time (Volvo may think the pads were the reason for the rotor replacement). They also firmly say it is silly to think it is required to change pads when new rotors are put in.... We are very unhappy, that the pads very not exchanged at the same time and would have paid for that ourself.

Q: What is your opinion? y/n change rotors & pads together and main reasons? Future anticipated issues with new rotors and "older" pads? ROOT CAUSE for warped rotors at 47.000 miles? If it is a caliper issue now at LF brake, should that have been noticed at 47.000 miles? Thanks for your help!

I agree with those who would replace the pads with the rotors. You can replace pads and not rotors, but it is not wise to replace rotors without pads. First...the cost...Pads are much cheaper...start the rotors out on the right foot. Why take a chance, even if a visual inspection makes you think the pads will last longer.

The dealer was penny pinching...getting you beyond the warranty.

I have both a 2001 and 1999 V70. The 2001 is a newer design...many things I don't really like..... It is basically a great car...powerful quiet, totally different feel. It is numb...but you do get this very minor vibration....I don't think its warped rotors. I think its just that the car is so quiet and so smooth that you feel a little something. The brakes are also massive compared to the 1999. I have a set of replacement rotors and pads. They were much more expensive than those for the 1999.

In all my years of driving, I'll never warped rotors. My son has, the ex has. We drive Volvos...the same type of Volvos...but different cars. I think sudden hard brakers warp rotors and moderate brakers don't.

I have a 98 V70. I recently changed my front rotors without changing the pads with no problem. I wouldn't necessarily change the pads unless they were visibly worn I wouldn't call a pad change automatic with new rotors. Just my .02

Your crazy not to put new pads with new rotors! The existing wear problem/pattern on the pads will cause same problem with new rotor.

If you are replacing the rotors you ABSOLUTELY need to replace the pads otherwise as the other user noted you will have the same wear/warping issues.
