Purchase: V70 AWD versus V70 XC

I'd like opinions on three different cars that are available to me: '98 V70 AWD, '98 V70 XC, and '99 V70 XC. All three are in very good condition with excellent service records. The mileage is in the 68,000 to 75,000 and I know one of them had new timing belt at 70K. I'm going to check if the belts were done on the other two.

I'm leaning towards buying the V70 AWD and not the XC because it seems to have a more comfortable ride.

I'd appreciate any opinions and any other advice on what to beware of.

your best bet is a '97 850 GLT wagon or a '98 V70 GLT FWD not AWD. GLT stands for light pressure turbo, plenty of power for little money. There are tons out there for sale.

'99 and newer come with an electronic throttle module, that fails often and is a dealer only repair to the tune of $1100.

They're the same cars EXCEPT that the '99 will cost you more when its ETM fails. '98s still had the trouble-free throttle cable, less BS IMO. I'd also opt for a FWD (NOT AWD) V70 instead as it'll be less problematic in regards to tire related AWD issues. Do a search here on "bevel gear" and you'll see.

So your opinion is to avoid the 4 wheel drive models altogether. These AWD Volvo models seem to be very popular. I did look up the bevel gear issue but how often does this occur? If you rotate tires evry 5K and watch your air pressue, and replace all 4 tires.

Now you have me thinking about a two wheel drive 2000 V70 SE with 60K that is also for sale. What to do, what to do...........

Many bad cars have been popular yet that doesn't make them good cars. Volvo and AWD hasn't been a great combo until recent years when they improved their AWD to the Haldex system ('03).

The earlier AWDs are generally costlier to own and generally more problematic when compared to the same car in FWD. Most people don't really NEED AWD.

Just my opinion but I'll never own any AWD Volvo.
