CD Player/Radio S80 1999

OK, No ideas on how fix the CD player(ERROR MSG. cannot eject, no shuffling). How about removal of that Beast from the center console. Please help, I really don't want to bring it in to the Stealer. I am thinking once removed, I will be able to inspect and possibly fix on my own.
Thank you.

I removed the forward cup holder. and unclipped the housing around the parking brake. I cannot remove anything else forward of the cupholder. Any help would be appreciated on getting the radio/CD player out.

You wont need to do anything with the parking brake or the housing. It's the cover around the shifter (park, reverse, neutral, etc.) that needs to be removed. I just went out and removed mine to be sure to give you specific details. In the space where your cup holder just was, look at the front top part of the space. There are a couple of openings. There are tabs inside of there on the top which hold the shifter cover in place. I found that if I push in the tab on the right (it's all the way up top), the other one released on it's own. This will allow you to pull up the cover part way. Now for the hard part I failed to mention before. This cover is two-piece and the outer portion must be removed from the inner piece. The inner piece is the one with the "W" (for winter driving) button on it and has wires which don't allow it to lift up as far as you will need it. There are four tabs which hold the inner cover to the outer one, one on each corner. Feel around to find these tabs. The back ones are easy to get to, the front ones are a bit harder. I used an allen wrench to push in and release the tabs. If you can get a screw driver to work for you, it will be easier, but there are some funny angles to reach some of the tabs (including the very first two back in the cup holder area). Once you've released the tabs to separate the two covers, the outer one will lift up to reveal the hex nuts on the climate control.

If you have any further difficulty, let me know and I'll take some digital pictures for you.

Let me know how it works out.

Thanks VDOGUY,
Thank you very much for taking the time! I saw the two holes but did not realize that the tabs were inside. Your instructions will help a great deal. I will post again with the results, sometime tomorrow.

Removal can be a little difficult unless you've seen it done and I'll try my best to explain how to do it without going out in the rain to check in the car. First thing you have to do is open, or preferably remove the forward cup holder. There's one or two tabs in the front which remove the shifter cover which can be accessed through an opening in the front of the cup holder. Push the tab(s) forward to release the shifter cover. Under the front of the cover you will see two hex screws holding the climate control in place. You must remove the screws and lower it down to find more hex holding the cd changer (I assume you have the 4-disc in dash unit). Remove the screws, pull the unit out and remove plugs from the back. It sounds more difficult than it is. You should be able to do it in less than 10 minutes your first time.

I've had exactly the same problem with my cd changer and pulled it to try and fix it. I work with a lot of electronics and frequently have to do repairs and have been able to fix all but one stereo in the past and thought I could do it again. I couldn't even come close to repairing it. I talked to someone at a reliable dealership and he said these go bad fairly frequently and they cannot be repaired. You can buy a refurbished unit for "not a horrible price", but still a little costly. I'm considering other options such as a rear-mount cd changer or an i-pod with an FM antennae, which gives me an i-pod and that would be great, but it means your music is reduced to FM quality.

I got two of my cd's out but couldn't retrieve the others. If you exchange it for another unit, they will send you your cd's back, but it can take up to 60 days.

Never done it, but to remove the stereo head unit, I believe you just push in, then pull out on the little rectangular plastic tabs (about 3mm x 20mm) on either side of the face-plate. -Daire
