OBDII Scanners S80 2001

I want to inquire about these OBDII scanners before I purchase one. Do they apply to these Volvo cars?
Should one invest in a scanner to help with messages that will appear as time goes on? Any suggestions or recommendations?

    My two cents:

BTW, that source that I mentioned for the Equus scanner now has it for $119.

I bought the AutoEnginuity OBD II scanner. It works on a laptop or a PDA. Seems to work well for me. The developer sells these on Ebay too. I bought mine for about $180. There are some Volvo specific codes that the OBD II cannot be read.

If you have access to a laptop (basically most any PC will work) you may want to look at Alex Peper's OBD II software. This software reads your CE codes and does a lot of other stuff as well such as displaying real time engine parameters. This package that sells for ~ $130. I think which is less than a lot of the higher end scan tools. With his system, you buy the connector and cable from him and download the software from his site. OBD-2.com. For just a basic code reader, a lot of guys like Harbor Freights scanner that sells for about 40 bucks.

I've chcked out his site, and I have to say that his site is very cluttered and busy! Has anyone ordered and used his system?

Yep, I've used it for about a year and overall it works very well. It does take a little getting used to (I'm not a great computer person) as some of the terminology/icons are a little strange. You can also take your car out on the road with the system plugged in and (provided you have a driver) go thru all the various engine parameters and see on gauges (and graph) them in real time or just save everything and go thru it when you get home.

I have Pepers hardware and program and like it for it's function, BUT I also have an Actron CP9135 OBD II AutoScanner that lives in the trunk for those times on the road when a lite comes on. You can find this on E-bay for under $75 or at autozone and others for about $150.
