ETL Cleaning --- What is it? S80 2000

Currently at 44,500 miles with an extended warranty.
I have experienced all the usual problems with the MAF sensor and TB, which I don't understand. My symtom is a fluctuating TAC. Sometimes the car almost jumps away from me. Am presently in need of an ETL cleaning costing about $250. What is this ? In the past same symtoms were corrected by the following:
1. @9722 miles - TB intake manifold replaced
2. @10,310 miles - software download
3. @ 10,578 miles - MAF sensor replaced
4. @ 24,317 miles - MAF sensor replaced
5. @27,089 miles - Electronic throttle module intake manifold cleaning and
replace loose air intake hose

Someone please explain this to me. Also, is this something I should just get used to? What about the $250 cleaning ... is this covered by warranty? Is the amount customary?

    ETM Cleaning? S80 2000

Do you mean that someone is trying to tell you that you need to CLEAN the electronic throttle module (ETM)? If so, it'll be a waste of your money.
Volvo USE TO have a TSB about cleaning them (first) but has since changed their minds on the idea as these cars would just come back with the same problems. If it's bad (with symtoms) and usually a CEL, the code(s) usually say "internal ETM fault" which means that it has internal circuitry problems, NOT a problem due to residue on the throttle butterfly, which I've never seen to be a real problem.

ETL Cleaning --- What is it? S80 2000

Welcome to the Electronic Throttle Module Trouble club! You are not alone, if that helps.

Please see "Double L" posting here in Brickboard on Nov 20. It is the best that I have ever seen (http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=882356) and it describes the problem and the solution (replacement).

I also have the same problem with my 2000 S80 and believe me, I am not a happy camper with Volvo and the dealer. This appears to be a well recognized component failure associated with a bad engineering design solution and Volvo will do whatever it is necessary to get the car out of warranty before it tells you the true story and the cost to fix it. Cleaning the ETM may help but it will not solve the problem.

    Hope this helps.
