theft alarm light 850 1996

driving away fro hotel this morn and about 5 minutes into trip the theft alarm light in the center of the dash right up under the windshield started to falsh continuously. a few minutes later the alarm horn went off for about thirty seconds then stopped. Light continued to flash steadily. Horn went through its thirty second cycle again and I could hear a relay behind or beneath the dash chattering rather rapidly. It was not the four way flashers. this went on for about thirty seconds then quit. The theft alarm went out. All is well. No sign of the car having been tampered with. Same routine for locking and unlocking used I have used for the last eight years. Fuses are good.
any guesses as to what would cause that sequence of events?

I would check out the hood/trunk sensors. If one of them is iffy (dirty), it'll keep making the alarm "think" the hood or trunk has been opened. In the meantime, I would disconnect that annoying 3rd horn (near the firewall) until you get it figured out. After hood/trunk I'd go for door sensors. Probably not the case otherwise your interior lights would light up while driving (car thinks a door was opened). Good luck.

hey, thanks for the heads up on the sensors. Hadn't really given them any thought since it was a one time occurence. Should be easy enough to check/adjust them if necessary. The firewall horn isn't all that noticeable at highway speed. I have had it scare the bejesus out of me in the garage one day when I set it off accidentally, but I was kind of expecting it when the light was flashing the other day. Very glad the "disabling mode" did not activate. Maybe is it overridden if the car is in motion.
      Thanks for the idea.
