volvo 850 clunkswhen turning left 850 1995

Hello all,

Yesterday as I was nearing the end of my trip fron Norfolk to Pittsburg, I began to hear a loud, clunking/grinding noise when turning left. It almost sounding like metal scraping together, but it only does this when I am turning to the left, even if I turn my steering wheel left a little bit while I am driving on the highway. I have an 850 GLT with cold climate package and a 5 speed manual transmission. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am in the Navy and ahve to be back by Monday.

    "Clunk" might be the bearing.
Also might be from a bad CV joint.
    Have to check them both.
You say a mechanic diagnosed it as a wheel bearing.
Probably right, but I'd also check the CV especially if the boot is worn.

    Lance.

Classic wheel bearing failure symtoms. Check out the the dianosis test at IPD.

that was my son who posted under my name. He and his shipmate had gone to the shipmates home to visit when all this happened. they did get to a local shop that found out it is the wheel bearing on the left side. they are now waiting for the part to come in so it can be fixed and they can get back to the ship.

Two things to check: Inspect brake pads and make sure that the pad lining hasn't worn done to the extent of metal to metal noise, however, this noise would most likely occur with braking, not turns. Next, there's a metal plate behind the rotor that can make a lot of noise if it contacts the rotor, and sometimes this noise is related to turns. If this is the case, just take a large screwdriver and bend the plate back a little.
