Excessive Wind Noise V70GLT V70-XC70 1999

Howdy,

I just purchased a '99 V70GLT and I am noticing excessive wind noise at speeds of above 40MPH. It is almost a howling sound. From what I can tell no seals are missing or loose but I am not an expert in this. The windshield gasket on both sides seems to be loose but no anymore than my '00 S70. On my S70 wind noise is almost non-existent, I hope this is not just a problem on the V70's. Any help ya'll can provide would be great and thanks for your time.

Taylor Jones

If you are not being plagued by a roof rack, as was previously suggested, or a sunroof that doesn't close all the way (check that both sides are at an equal height when closed), or a failing window regulator (window not quite shut), you may be hearing the wind deflect off of the windshield molding. If the last six of your vin are between 590194 and 643356, you are affected by service bulletin section 8, group 84, number 0024: windshield molding upper noise, It calls for the replacement of the molding, replacement part #9483768, cost 2.34.

    Hope this helps,

    Chris

On my V70 the windows are all the way up but the VIN does appear in the correct range of the service bulletin. Ill take it into the dealer soon but, the sunroof is not raised to the level of the roof in the rear. The front of the sunroof also appears to be sitting above the roof line. Can I get this adjusted easily, and do I need to take it to my dealer also? Thanks, Tjones.

      Hi, Chris,

My VIN falls between the numbers you listed. I am the second owner of my 99 v70, how can I find out whether my windshield molding has been replaced? If not, whom should I contact to get it replaced? Thank you.

      Happy holidays,

      Puhong

Hi, and Happy Holidays to you as well,

Since only campaigns are documented on individual cars, not service bulletins, you'd have to access the prior owners repair orders or records to verify if it had been done before. I've noticed that the ones affected, that haven't been replaced, seem to have almost a lip that will "grab" the air, as opposed to being smooth, and allowing for unhindered air flow.

        Hope this helps,

        Chris

          Thanks, Chris,

Seems the one on my car is flat and smooth. There is not much wind noise also. I guess it has been replaced. Thank you very much for your info.

          Best,

          Puhong

I hope this doesn't sound too dumb, but could the source of the wind noise be roof rack crossbars? I remove my crossbars when I am not using them because the wind noise (also above 40mph) is a loud howl that is really noticeable.

    Just a thought.

Try pulling up on the window switches after the front windows are all the way up. On my 03 V70 pulling up on the front window switches seems to cause the windows to do a secondary sealing and decreases wind noise to almost nothing, this seems to be also the same in friend's 04 S60 and other late model Volvos I have tried. This is not documented in the owner's manual.
