I have an s70 glt 1998.

(8 days ago the check engine light went on. Havent been able to get appt with dealer yet since they are booked and wont get appt till monday after thanksgiving. Anyways, there is a possibility that 02 sensor burned out. Was changed last time at 45k miles. No I got 71k miles. Was gonna take car on 800 mile roadtrip for thanksgiving. Obviously bad idea with check engine light right? Can fault codes for check o2 sensor be checked at other shops? ODBII I assume? Advice appreciated. Dont want to wreck catalytic converter.

We don't know where you live, but do you have an Autozone in your area? They will lend you a reader for free and you can check it out there. Just have your Pocket Data Booklet handy, they don't have all of the code definitions.

You can get a cheap one from Harbor Freight for about $38. Just displays the error codes' doesn't scan the sensors. Don't know if it can read all the Volvo proprietary codes but HF has a good return policy if it doesn't work for you.

What is this? Is this a serious problem?

I think that is one of those codes related to emissions (it gets politicians like "Ozone Al" Gore all up in arms) that has no effect on the engines performance. A bad O2 sensor reveals itself by a drastic drop in MPG, sooty, fumey exhaust and rough idle.

I would clean the throttle body (take's about 30 minutes), reset the ECU, and see if problem reoccurs.
