Auto transmission fluid change 850 1995

My T5R has 61000 miles and has never had the transmission fluid changed ( had the car since new). Is it OK to do a full flush at this stage of its life?

Thanks for all the inputs - it's done and such an easy job - I use 1 gallon milk jugs so that keeping track of two quarts at a time was simple.
I feel better now that it's done
I have to admit, though, I do not notice any diffence in the shifts etc.

Agree with everyone here that the secret to a long lived AW50-42 is clean, good viscosity oil. There is no substitute except a replacement transmission.

Call me paranoid (most engineers are), but I put in a remote oil filter and a trans. oil cooler.

One to keep it clean ( cause original has no filter ) and the other to keep it cool. Heat breaks down any oil, synthetic or not. Synthetics are simply more stable at higher temperatures and retain their viscosity longer.
Also installed a capped tee to permit easier flushing, which I still do at regular intervals.

The Hayden 1401 cooler is adequate and fits nicely behind the dual front horns in front of the radiator. Not large enough to cause airflow problems with radiator but big enough to cool the tranny oil a good 10F - 20 F or so.

Remote oil filter fits in front of batter and behind left front headlight.
Oil lines barely fit between the air intake box and it's opening thru the radiator support. Barely is good enough. Uses a standard PH8 filter cartridge.

Also add 1.5 Qts of additional oil to compensate for the increased storage volume.

After 20K, everything is still as clean and red as it was the day the oil was changed out and flushed. No degradation that I can tell.

This is not a plug for products, but just where I got my parts.

I'd use the Mobil One ATF as well. Also install a 3/8" Magnefine inline filter in the return line. There's no filter in the 850's transmission and the Magnefine will go a long way toward it's service life. Good luck.

Think about using Mobil 1--I used it on my third flush and it made a significant difference. Yup, it'll cost you a few more bucks, but well worth it.

did my 95 gle at 60k and the stuff that came out was BLACK note it didnt look to bad on the dip stick! made an immediate difference and 20k later its still great, another 10k and it gets done again whether it needs it or not it cheap insurance...

Agreed, do it ASAP. Easy cheap DIY job, can potentially save you thousands of dollars in transmission replacement costs.

Mine got changed for the first time when I bought the car at ~90K. Stuff that came out was beyond black and smelled horrible, some of the worst looking tranny fluid I've seen. Changing it made an immense improvement in transmission shift quality. So far no problems, I think I may have gotten to it in the nick of time, before any substantial or permament damage was done. Get yourself some new clips for the cooler lines, a length of tubing, and a case of fluid, or just buy the kit from IPD or somewhere like that, it contains everything but the fluid.

agreed...at 60k mine was well nasty....also my upper mount was shot, thats easy and makes as much difference again...

also make sure you get the little o-ring that seals the pipe (buy 2 in case you nick one)...

Do the flush, and then do it again after 25k miles to clean up the tranny good and proper.

good god, a 9 year old car with only 61000 miles!!! that is half the normal amount the average person puts on a car a year.

I've put them all on ( most by my wife). I bought her an x-type so I got the T5R
I would like to keep it in good shape and hang on to it.
