Loss of Power and stalling 850 1993

I own a 93 850 GLT Automatic, non turbo with 160K on the meter. Recently the car experiences loss of power and stalls on occasions while idling and during driving. Took it to the mechanic whom repaired it for a vacuum leak, but the stalling returns within a few days after repair. At times, the car can idle for 10s of minutes without any problem and other times it would cut off at a traffic stop. Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    I was having the same exact problem on my '93 850 (110K miles). See my post-- '93 850 engine dies while driving. A/C or electrical problem? 850--from Thu Oct 21, 2004.

    I also got advice to change the fuel pump relay (labeled 103). I have one on order, but having installed it yet. Here's a

      Ginger, Thanks again for taking the time to response to my volvo's stalling problem. Installed a new relay, and it has been a week of stall free, touched wood. Your share of experience and suggestion saved us dollars not to mention the stress we are spared! Thanks for the helpful picture as well!

      Cheers for your response! You are the second response with a relay suggestion. Apart from a dead A/C (before we bought it 2 hot summers ago), the electrics are in good working order. Thanx for the helpful picture link by the way! Will replace mine.

    Magnetic valve , that have a vaccum hose connect 850 1993

    I have a same problem 2 months ago........ come to stop stall....

    after check and replace all vaccum leak..... problem still there....

    I am going nut. last result.

    I replace the fuel pump relay number (103 green color) it solve the problem no more stalling.

    the fuel pump relay located inside the engiene compartment.. infront of the driver side.. right below the windshiel. it have a cover down with a lid open with 4 screw (if I remenber correcltly) you will many relay. and their is
    one on top stamp (103) green color////

    when I buy new relay from dealer it do not said (103) on top but it said fuel pump relay.... cost for the parts is $70 I forget...

    but I can sure to you this may and could your prolem...

      Mrsha, Thanks again for taking the time to response to my volvo's stalling problem. Installed a new relay, and it has been a week, which up until recently would have resulted in several stallings, but with this new relay the symptoms has not returned, touched wood. Your share of experience and suggestion and we are grateful to this website, which has saved us dollars not to mention the stress we are spared!

    If the vacuum leak fix solved the problem, I would look at the fix again and ensure the "fix" is not leaking again.
    Does the tranny lock up when you come to a stop? Try putting it in neutral before you stop and see if that solves the problem. Check the tranny fluid level.

      Thank you for your response! The tranny does not lock up when the car come to a stop. I also had the transmission fluid changed at the same time when the car was in for vacuum leak repairs. I will check both the tranny fluid level and have the car tested for recurrent vac leak like you have suggested though. I was thinking that it might be a clogged fuel filter or even bad injectors in addition to the vacuum leak causing the symptoms the car is experiencing. The car cuts out on me during driving as well, does tranny lock up happens during driving too?
