Rear suspension rattle 850

Got a rattle on the drivers side rear when I go over sharp bumps.
It's not a clunk, but more like a light metal on metal sound.
I took it in and had the rear calipers, shocks, springs and bushings, exhaust, etc. looked at and everything checked out tight and fine.
(My 86 760 had the same symptom.)???

There is a small circular bracket bolted into the bottom of your spring mount. On the passenger side of my 850 turbo (95), the weld holding the bolt to that bracket broke. Hence the metalic rattle when you go over bumps. If this is your problem, you will know it immedicately because you can rattle the broken part at the base of the spring with your fingers. But if you are not looking for it, can be easy to overlook. Seemed like replacement would be a difficult fix, so I just held the nub of bolt that protudes from the spring mount secure with vice grips, leaving enough room to put a wrench on the nut and tighted it up. Worked like a charm. Zero cost fix to an irritating problem.

CAT heat shield? Try shaking the exhaust tip. It could come from inside the muffler.

Thanks Guys,
I did clean out my spare well on the weekend and after reading your suggestion thought that might be the cause - nope! everything is secure back there...
The rattle is akin to a grocery cart going over a bump (light metallic), so
I can't see it being one of my shock towers either since it is definitely originating from under the rear exterior.

I had something like that and i found the cause.I will share this and hope this helps you. On the lower part of the metal plates behind the rear brake rotors, there is a plastic part section atacched to the metal plate. With time it becomes loose. Raise your car and knock on this plastic thing. If it is loose it makes that light metal rattling sound. Repair? Pop rivet it in place.

Did you look at the upper shock mounts? The cup-like mounts tend to wear around the hole, which is somewhat covered by the nut. If they're loose, you should be able to move the shock shaft with a hard object. Not a big deal to repair, about 40 bucks for a set of two, and a DIY type job.

Does it do it with the rear seat backs down? Relatch the backs, hard.
