What is the little red light next to the info display for? 850

Mine is occasionally on and I am not sure why?

    It is to tell you that there may be ice on the road by sensing the road temp. On mine there is a snow flake beside the light.(96 850 GLT)

    I just bought a used 850 this year and was wondering the same thing
    when I drove to work last week.

    Have you noticed that it's getting cold in your neighbourhood? When the ambient temperature drops below 3C and is above -5C (check your manual) the lamp comes on as a safety warning for potential icy road conditions.
