Suspension clunking V70-XC70 1996

I'm getting a light clunking noise from the front end at 99k miles. There is nothing loose at the bottom end of the suspension/steering but at the top of the suspension towers there is a gap of about 3mm. 1/8th. of an inch. This gap goes to zero when the front end is jacked up and the wheel hangs free. Should this gap be adjusted down to zero or are the springs shot?

Regards Chris.

It might be a upper strut mount. very easy to check, just try to rotate the strut nut with a socket. if it springs back, it is ok, if is spins around it is bad. another area to check are the sway bar end links.

No. It sounds like the top bushings/donut is shot. There should be no play whatsoever.
