Leaking Heater Core S70

Howdy Gents!

Took my car into the dealer because I thought the defrosters were not working well. They are telling me that it is a leaky heater core that is causing the condensation. And as luck would have it, my warranty just ran out 500miles ago. They qouted me for 680 on the part.

Are there any other solutions to this besideds replacing the heater core? Some additive to the coolant maybe? Or is that bad for the cooling system, espcially if it is a turbo?

Thanks in advancce!
Yo Han

    Hi.
I do have the same problem. I do have the 199 2.0T (1994cc turbo).
I used 2 packs of stop leak additive and it worked.
It was leaking a bit bad (I had to fill up from Min to Max every 250 miles).

I don't know how this will afect the alu block header, but this will give me more time to get a replacement Behr (the original manufacturer for Volvo).

    Try http://brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=863508

    Hope you get luck,

Depending on how mechanically inclined you are (doesn't have to be too much), you can do this repair yourself. OEM (Behr) part is $129 through www.importspecialistsofamerica.com and the job took me less than 3 hours.

The dash does not have to be removed. Go to www.volvospeed.com and do a search on heater core in the FWD/AWD section of the site, and you will find lots of info on the repair.

If you are really just 500 miles out of warranty, call Volvo HQ. This took a while to develop and is not a "wear" item. At least you might get 50-50. It's not easy to replace.
Do not use additives, they only work on microscopic size holes anyway. If you get it replaced, ask for new hoses as well. Save yourself some hassles later on.
