synthetic transmission fluid S80

I have a 2000 S80 T6 with 69K miles. I am thinking of switching to synthetic transmission fluid. What kind/type/brand replaces Dextron III for my car?

Hey, Amsoil is the best in synthetics by far, and is all we use in our race cars, Their ATF replaces all types of ATF even dextron 3. Were do you live? I know a whole bunch of dealers in the washington area that can hook you up for a very competive price.

Forums like this lead you to believe that the transmission in the S80 has a higher probability of breaking down before, say 100k miles, than, say a Toyota transmission.

Evidently, practically no one (it has been posted that Volvo techs are not trained to take the S80 transmissions apart) rebuilds them, so you have to get a rebuilt factory unit at great cost.

I noticed that my Volvo dealer has a BG brand machine to flush transmissions and I know that some tech/experts recommend BG flushes every 24K. The Volvo owners manual doesn't mention the transmission oil changes, as I recall it.

So I decided to take my 2000 S80 T6 to a well known reliable shop for a BG flush every 30K. But I really don't know if that will help the odds.

The idea of doing something after the transmission fluid changes color or smells different is rediculous. It's too late at that point.

By all means do the flush with synthetic. Two good ones are Amsoil ATF and Mobil 1 ATF. Both replace Dextron III and will outperform dino by a lot. It's an easy DIY project. I've posted detailed instructions which I have appended here.

        Changing S80 Transmission fluid.
Power flushing is a simple DIY job. I use synthetic Mobil-1 ATF or Amsoil. You will need up to 15 quarts.
Disconnect the upper cooling hose. Squeeze the plastic retainer tabs together, push the hose in to release the catches and wiggle, wiggle, pull, pull. Cover the hose end with a baggie.
Clamp 6 ft of clear plastic 1 inch ID hose (hardware store item) over the radiator fitting, and prepare to drain into gallon bottles or a calibrated bucket, so that you know when you have removed about 12 quarts. Idle the engine to pump out fluid. Shut off immediately when bubbles appear in the clear hose. Add two quarts down the dipstick hole using a tranny filler funnel and hose from auto supply or chain store. Repeat the pump/fill cycle. Somewhere in the middle of this you may run the shift thru D N R while idling to assist the clean out. Once you've removed 12 quarts, the fluid should start running clean shortly thereafter, at which point reinsert the cooling hose into the radiator.

Topping-off tip. I put a scratch on my dipstick exactly 4 inches from the bottom. This is where my fluid sits with the engine cold, off, and level. It is a very good approximation of where you should fill to. The owner's manual has the official level check procedure.

Thanks for this great DIY procedure. But a question...you say to disconnect the "upper" trans hose at the radiator and then to put the clear plastic hose on the trans cooler fitting, not the line coming from the trans. This implies that the trans fluid is pumped through the trans cooler "backwards"? In other words, from the bottom to the top?

Just wondering...as I think most radiators work with the hot fluid going into the top and the cooled fluid coming out the bottom. I would have thought that the same flow direction would apply to the trans fluid running through the trans cooler, but maybe not.

Can you please confirm, many thanks.

Confirming that on the S80 6 cyl engines the fluid comes out the top of the cooler. May have to do with the hose connection placement at the tranny end. Older 850s and the like do flow OUT the upper HOSE.

Some dealers would rather charge you to replace a tranny! Check the fluid, if it's brown, flush it down.
