gas mileage question V70-XC70 1998

5 have a '98 v70 AWD (not XC) with about 65,000 miles. I get between 16 and 23 MPG (I only get 23 if on a long trip that's all freeway driving. Usually I'm around 17 or 18 all around. My check engine light is on, and I'm told I need a new rear oxygen senso, but that it's not an emergency. Would a defective oxygen sensor lead to decreased mileage?

How much do those of you who have v70 awd's or XC's get out of a gallon of gas?

as always, thanks

yes, worn/old O2 sensors will cause reduced mileage.

Our 2000 Cross country gets 24mpg on the highway and 19mpg around town using 93 octane. These numbers have been consistant. A freind of mine with an 2001 cross country gets similar milage.

Very interesting. See my post below about suddenly reduced mileage. I used to get about 16-17 in the city, and a good 27-28 on the highway. After our two-year check-up (we only have 9,000 miles on the car), I suddenly get vastly reduced mileage. The ENTIRE average (for the LIFE of the car) is now down below 16 and falling. Any idea why this might have happened? Thanks.
