Spark Plugs

Do spark plugs really need to be changed at 30,000 miles? Or is it that you can wait until the fuel economy gets low and then change them?

I know if you don't do the timing belt in time, it can cause extremely expensive repairs, but what would happen if you don't change the spark plugs for 60,000 miles? Poor fuel economy?
