    oil change & cabin filter

Anyone can change the oil. Just make sure you have a filter which meets Volvo specs and a new crush washer. I would also suggest going syn oil so you don't need to change it every 3,000 miles. Some have trouble getting the filter off, my hands are large enough to do it quite easily, and you might want to invest in a filter wrench/puller. Make sure it will fit into the area around the filter. BTW, I use a large piece of cardboard to catch any oil drips - I tend to get messy while upside down.

Cabin filters are nice, but your 94 didn't come with one. FCP Groton sells a kit to install one, I put it in in less than an hour (I may be slow and methodical). You will need to invest in some torx screw drivers if you want to work on Volvos. Sears has a good selection. I would replace the cabin filter every time you need to replace the engine air filter - about once a year.

I use Sears Oil Filter Tool 46955

      1. Oil Change:

      Go to: www.sears.com

      and search:
"46955", you will see the tools sold for $6.99.
      Used with a ratchet.
I have used this tool for Volvo and my other cars.
Removing the OF is a snap.

*** To install new OF, fill it with 1/2 quart of fresh engine oil to make startup better (oil gets to critical engine parts faster than with an empty OF).
Tip: I wear either exam gloves or dishwashing gloves, tighten the OF BY HAND (NOT BY TOOL). Spin until OF is finger tight. Then tighten BY HAND for 3/4 of a turn.

*** RE: Convention oil vs synthetic OIL. Synthetic is more costly. If you read a recent Consumers Reports on engine oil testing of New York City cabs, you will be surprised that engine oil can be good even beyond 10K miles.
Short trips less than 20 min and 7 miles is bad for the engine because by-products of combustion gets down into the oil and do not have the opportunity to
burn off. Once in while drive the car on highway or more than 30 minutes (if possible).
For the last 8 years, all my cars get oil change at 5-7K and once or twice a year. Never has engine problems.
Remember that the "old" recommendation of 3 months 3K miles for oil change came from Oil Idustry that wants to sell oil.
Independent lab testing data is very different.
