Whether or not you have an external amp depends on what options were ordered / added, but it's easy to find out. Slide out your head unit and look at the rear side. if there is an external amp, there will be a round black (usually) cable plugged into a space labelled "amp". If there is, unplug it, and see if you can follow it to where the amp is located ( may take some trial and error, and a lot of contortions, since it may be included in another wiring bundle for part of the way). Common places for the amps to hide include the driver's side under dash area, the center console below the head unit.
If there is an external amp, there is likely to be an auxiliary wiring harness to provide power to the amp and output from the amp to whichever of the speakers are powered by that amp; that sub-harness will usually be plugged into the vehicle harness, the amp, and the rear of the head unit. Unplug it at the head unit and at the vehicle harness connection point--that will cut power to, and sound output from, the amp. (unplugging the round black "amp" cable has cut off pre-amp input to the amplifier already) Plug your aftermarket wiring adapter into the vehicle harness connector.
Confused? Get the wiring diagrams, which will help you to identify the wires by both connection and color, and to locate the various connectors and components. Also helps you avoid that "oops" followed by the smell of frying insulation.
