Front End 'Clunk' S80

I own an S80 T6 (2000) with about 45,000 miles on it. I continually hear a gentle clunking sound from the front end (more the driver's side I think) whenever I go over bumps (including very minor bumps). I describe it as a gentle clunk as it is a not a dramatic noise, but it is there for every bump. I'm now into the extended warranty period and I'm not sure what the suspension coverage is. Any ideas on the cause and potential cost would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Keith

Agree with one of the other replies posted. I was battling with an unidentified thunking sound in my front-end. Was odd because it tended to be audible even more so on minor bumps. I described it more of a rattling sound rather than a thunk. Anyway, it ended up being sway bar links. Wasn't too expensive of a repair... compared to the multitude of other front-end repairs I have had since purchasing this car (struts, tie-rods, and ball joints). Hopefully your luck with your front-end is better than mine. Good luck!

Thanks to all. It turned out to be "anti-roll bar linkss" which I assume are sway bars links. The mechanics asked if I heard it more frequently at low speeds and minor bumps, which I did. It cost me $50 thanks to the deductible on my extended warranty.

      Take care,

      Keith

Hi There...I have a 2000 S80 T6 with 65,000 miles that experienced the exact same thing. Dealer replaced the Seat Springs...near the Struts I'm told and that fixed the problem. As other person said, cost was around $250.00 for both but in my case the Volvo Certified Warranty covered them and my cost was only $50.00.

My 1995 850 wagon needs new steering stabilizer links every 25,000 to 40,000 km. They express symptoms very similar to what you're describing when they're ready for replacement. The first replacement was required at 111,000km then again at intervals of 26,000km, 29,000km and 39,000km. Parts & labor to replace them ran around $225 CDN each time. The parts prices dropped for some reason so the last job was $175 CDN. The first replacement didn't last a year so the second was done under the parts warranty.

The car was bought used at 83,000 km and was moved to a harsher, bumpier environment. The previous owner's service records showed no problems so bumpy local roads may have revealed this weakness in the design.

Hopefully your S80 hasn't inherited the same flaw.

Sway bar links would be my guess.(I dont own a S80) Every other Volvo I've owned has needed them at about 50,000 miles. They don't run more then 25-30 dollars each (you need two) and installation is very simple.
