Engine Knock? Or exhaust leaking? 850

I recently noticed an odd noice on a cold engine. It only exists when I accelerate, go uphill, etc, where the load is higner. No noise at any rpm in Neutral. When the engine warms up this noise is much lower.
The noise is like engine knocking (pinging), not sevre, but I never had one before. When I open windows and listen to reflected sound it is like exhaust leaking. The engine has 136K.

Do Volvo engines of this model knock? If they do, would I pull some codes from the computer?
