Gas tank 139 recall 850

Just had the 1996 850 GLT in for some unrelated work, and the dealer notified me that they needed to complete the 139 recall (Gas tank inspection/repair), which in my case was to install four rubber bushings between the tank and heat sheild. I thought for sure I would get a new tank since I live in a southern state (High Heat), and I smell fuel after a fill up.

Dealer has determined that the smell is from a small leak around the fuel pump, so now I need to replace the seal on the fuel pump. I think I am going to do this one at the house, so any tips on dropping the tank would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

If all is true, what is the cost approx. for dealer or independent to fix. I need to bring mind in for the recall; however, my leak appears to be from the pump area and the leaking to the goose neck. If it is at the dealer, I was wondering why not get it fixed all at once, part theirs and part mind. I travel and do not have the time or lux to spend going to different places. Just wondering, and thanks to all for your help.

P.S. My brother-in-law wrecked or someone else did the car in, he is thinking about replacing it with S70 1998 or below or 940. Any suggestions? Steve

You do not have to drop the tank. You can access the fuel pump and sender from inside the trunk, under the carpeting. It is under a metal cover that is held down by six(I think) nuts that are 10mm wrench size. The biggest cover is the fuel pump. Also make sure that where the wiring goes thru the top of the pump is not mushy and leaking. If thats the case you need a new pump.

Thank you for the quick response. If the pump is leaking, can it be replaced via the same access hole???

Yes. You'll lift up the pump assembly to replace the gasket. Inspect the hose and fittings on top of the assembly before you remove any retaining bolts, you may find the leak is actually one of those things.
