PNP? 850

Hi,
Need help? Had my tranny rebuilt and they also changed the PNP switch. I notice that in the am esp when it is cold my car won't start but if i play with the shifter from P to L, car starts up. There was a time that early am on my way to work, tranny seems to be on L even if i was on D and i stopped then played with the shifter again then car ran normal. If arrow blinks and i turn off engine, for sure car won't start and i have to play with the shifter again or disconnect negative pole.
I also notice my TPS(throttle position sensor) is humming and is actually annoying.
I check on A1 codes and read 223(TPS signal too low) and 313 (faulty signal from PNP). Bottom line, i went to the wrong tranny shop! They can't fix it since they claim it's electrical. Is there really an adjustment to the PNP switch?
Any info's is highly appreciated.
thank you so much

Are you a good shade tree mechanic? I can send you the guide for adjusting the linkage and PNP switch but if you can't work on your car it won't do you any good. But you can adjust the PNP switch without the special Volvo tool, just set the parking brake and put the gear selector in the Reverse position and move the PNP switch a few degrees one way or the other till the reverse lights come on steady then snug down the switch bolts and you should be good to go. The hassle is getting to the PNP switch. You have to remove a bunch of stuff mounted above the driver's side over the tranny. It's that flat switch mounted on the shaft where the shift cable connects. There's a good How-To article over at VolvoSpeed Bay 13 on the PNP switch. Look under the repair and maintenance section and transmissions : http://www.volvospeed.com/volvo_performance.php

Good luck.

hello again,
i was just wonderin' if the tranny shop w/c rebuilt my trans is responsible for messing up my TPS/or idle air valve and definitely my PNP switch w/c never had a problem before? For sure my tranny gave in but had not TPS/idle air valve problem such as that annoying sound and the reverse gear with a thud when i shift w//c accdg to the trany shop is caused by a PNP misaligned switch.

I hope this is no BS.

thanks for the info.

PNP? Yep ........ engine OFF 850

Do it with the engine OFF. You only need to turn the ignition key to the ON position but donīt start the motor. Make sure the parking brake is on too. I donīt want to read about you getting run over in your driveway next week.

Who replaced the PNP, dealer or indie?

Sounds like the new PNP was not aligned correctly, that's why you are having problems starting unless you play with the lever.

The alignment of the PNP requires a special volvo tool, something that an indie shop most likely won't have. Take it back.

thank's for the info. any input on the humming sound of the TPS?

Humming sound is from the idle air valve.
Try removing it and cleaning out with carb cleaner.

You also seem to have a problem with the TPS it's on the throttle body.
Try diisconnecting the wiring connector, cleaning contacts and replacing.

Reset the faukt code and see what happens.

Contains a diagram with labeled parts.

I suggest you remove the idle air valve and the throttle body and give them a good clean with petrol or carb cleaner.
Be careful not to soak the idle air valve motor or the TPS in the cleaner.

Have a good look for vacuum leaks at the rubber elbows.
