Volvo 850 T-5R 850 1995

I just bought a 1995 T-5R. It's black and I'm very proud. I have a couple of questions though. First, there is no record of anything. It has 115,000 and I have to assume that the T-belt was replaced, but I don't know for sure. I imagine I'll just do it to be sure, but how soon? Also, it used to have a 6-disc changer, but I can't find it. Stupid, but where was/is it? On the issue of plugs: Bosch FR7DC?

Thanks in advance for any replies. Very excited, and this site is very cool.

Greg

What a fun car. Lots of zoom above 3500 rpm. I just swapped radios at my dealer, pulled out my SC812, wrote the security code and VIN on a piece of paper, gave him $230 (tax included) and slid in the new SC816. Now we never use the CD remote in the trunk.

If you cannot find out when the timing belt was changed, change it. And go to bay13 and learn how to change the tranny fluid. If you like to go 0-60 a lot, change the tranny fluid every time you change the oil(synthetic, of course). Leave the mode switch in fun mode(S) and have some fun. Turn the radio off so you can hear the turbo spoolin' :)

Most of the time when a shop (or a good mechanic....) changes the timing belt a sticker is applied to the timing belt cover with the mileage written on the sticker when the belt was changed. Other than that you'd have to ask the previous owner, or take the timing belt cover off and examine the condition of the belt yourself looking for any cracks or burn marks that indicate a change is needed.
The original six-disc changer was mounted high in the trunk, between the speakers. If it's not there anymore you can swap out your stock SC-811 cassette radio for a later model SC-816 CD/Stereo at your dealer for about $215 exchange. That way you'll have the CD player in the dash.
The plugs you mention sound about right. Anything but Champion plugs will run fine. I use the Bosch +4 plugs, but they don't do anything special.
The '95 T5 is OBD-II compliant (Data Port under the coin holder in console...) and also has the DTC code boxes under the hood to read any malfunction codes that set off the Check Engine Light. You can also enter a code and get the ECU recorded mileage if you suspect the odometer mileage to be off. It was very common for the plastic gear that drives the odometer and tripmeter to break, but the speedometer would still function fine. If you want an OBD-II reader I would recommend the Actron 9135. Its easy to use and made in the USA. However you can reset your Service light under the hood with the DTC boxes, whereas the '96 and newer Volvos depended on a service tool plugged into the Data Port to reset their Service light (oil changes).

Thanks very much for the info. Looks like someone took the cd changer. How do I get to the t-belt cover? I looked at Bay13, which step would you be able to see it? My mechanic is going to be in trouble if there is a sticker, he wanted me to replace it, although he did say it looked fine.

This site is going to be very handy indeed.

        REPLACE IT...

look at ti this way, if you DONT replace it and it breaks...you no longer have an engine...

You DO replace it you know your ok for 80k or 8 years...

now generally the stickers are stuck somewhere pretty damn obvious (mechanics beeing lazy and wanting to be able to see easily when it was last done...)

if you dont KNOW its been done ASSUME it hasnt...and your REALLY REALLY living on borrowed time...

in short how much are you willing to bet the engine...because thats what your doing...while your there cahnge the tensioner as well, and probably the uppe r engine mount...
