Intermittent A/C problems '97 850 T-5 850 1997

I have two separate problems with A/C. I purchased car recently and don't know history of the system. As per some other posters I am doing all I can to lengthen life of the expensive evaporator coil by turning off the A/C about 30 seconds prior to arriving at destination, however, my A/C problem has nothing to do with that. Here are the issues:

#1: Every now and then the REC switch and the A/C switch lights flicker back and forth. I'll pay more attention next time, but I believe it was after the car started, but I hadn't turned the A/C on. Once A/C on, its ok.

#2 Ocassionally the A/C will stop blowing cold air and just blow air. This may last for two or three minutes and then its back to cold air with no intervention on my part.

Its still hot here in Houston! Thanks for any and all info!

->Error code is stored. Maybe you have a sensor or servo-motor that is malfunctionning in your climate control system.

-> maybe the compressor clutch is worn out or maybe the overheat sensor on back of the compressor turns it off. Is it rpm-related or it turns off when you turn right/left? that would be the clutch. Does it turn off when it is very hot outside? that would be the clutch (exmansion of the metal) of the overheat sensor.

    those are my suggestions

You are correct. The Recirc and A/C LEDs do flash right after starting the car, this is telling you there is a malfunction code stored in the computer and you need to read the code and fix the problem. The problem is probably that your A/C system is low on R134, this is probably why your A/C is shutting down on you and just blowing ambient air. You can service it yourself if you are comfortable doing that kind of stuff. Just go to the local Walmart and buy a A/C service kit that has a gauge already attached in the line (blue hose). Get one or two cans of R134 too. It will probably take a can of R134 to get your system back up to snuff. The A/C low pressure service port is located just forward of the passenger side strut tower. With the blue service hose connected to the can of R134 you can connect the other quick connect end to the low pressure service port. Don't connect the quick connect to the car's A/C line without the service hose being connected to the can of R134 or you will blow all your freon out into the atmosphere and a loud alarm goes off in Washington and the FBI and Mattress Police come to your house and beat you senseless. But seriously you'll lose all your freon. There's only two cans in there but it's a hassle to start over to fix it. Read the instructions on the A/C service kit, they're pretty easy to follow, and you should be able to service your A/C system by yourself. You probably should install a A/C inlet air filter if the previous owner didn't retrofit one already. It goes up there under the plastic fairing under the windshield wipers, on the passenger side. Filters the incoming air if you have the vent opened to the outside rather than the recirculate mode. In normal operation you should have the system in the recirculate mode (the recirculate light should be ON...). Good luck and post if you need more help.

Why do you run with the Recirculate ON normally?

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'll get an OBD-II and check the error codes and then proceed to freon if thats the way to go. Thanks.
As for running the Recirculate--I've done it in every car, recirculating the cold air is more efficient and cooler than bringing in fresh air.
