I think your best option would be to take an AWD Volvo, like an 4X4 850, or an XC70 or whatever, and fit customised traction control so that you can opt to send all the power to the rear wheels when you want. You could have it hooked up to the speedo, so it disengages the front wheels at 50mph+ or whatever, there are lots of possibilities with electronic traction.

I don't know what the setup is for Volvo's AWD system, it might already be possible with a little reprogramming, depending on how smart the setup is.

I've never once seen it done. I used to hate the conversion to a FWD Volvo, but have come to appreciate the FWD as it can do some things RWD cannot. FWD seems to have better traction and handling when road conditions are less than optimal. I remember my 740 and 940 sometimes wanted to send me into a spin when I pushed the limits. The 850 is really forgiving when it comes to spin-outs, power slides, etc. Not to say I drive like a maniac on civil roads, but I like to goof off every now and then in empty fields, empty parking lots, or empty streets around here. I know I'm going off topic but I just wanted to say that both FWD and RWD have their advantages over the other. Still miss the RWD models when long trips come around, though...

.....can't be done. If you want RWD, buy a RWD car.

Yes, it happens to all of us when we are backing 850

our 850 S70 cars. When in reverse it is a RWD car. Just a joke of course.

Personally I do not care too much about my 1998 V70. I still miss my RWD 1991 240 5spd Volvo that I sold. The drive from that old brick was unbelievably solid.
