ETS User Fix S70 2000

After a few let downs with the ETS warning on 2000 S70 with 95,000 miles and the wait to cooldown and restart, or limp home,I replaced the gasket between the intake manifold and throttle body with a thicker 1/8"-3mm cork/Rubber gasket, installed a home made foil heat shield behind, and attached a CPU heat sink to the underside of the Throttle Body. Unit is now running much cooler, and so far so good.

How is this experiment going? S70 2000

My 99 V70 XC 112K has the lumpy idle, foreshadowing ETM trrouble. But I thought this was due to the Pcv sysyem clogging and back spraying crackcasr fumes through the throttle body/ETM. Is this another ETM problem or are they all heat related?

UNFORTUNATELY THE DREADED ETS WARNING RETURNED YESTERDAY AFTER IDLING FOR A LONG TIME IN TRAFFIC. THE UNIT WAS HOT AGAIN, THE ENGINE FAN RAN AS I SAT AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND I COULD FEEL THE UNIT COOLING. AFTER 5 MINUTES I SHUT OF THE PULSATING VOLVO, WHEN I RESTARTED THE THROTTLE BODY HAD COOLED, AND I DROVE HOME. I WILL NOW ADD THE 12VDC FAN, AND MAYBE SOME ADDITIONAL COOLING FINS. I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED

On our 99, V70 it seems that just be shutting off the engine and restarting clears the ETS for a week or so without out allowing time for cooling.

Just wondering how you determine the the ETS issues is related to heat?

Are there multiple situations or conditions that can contribute to the ETS problem? I have searched this and other boards. Many people have issues with the ETS but have yet to find a post that attempt to address the root cause.

If it is truly heat related, I was considering attaching a peltier device to the ETS and a large heatsink and fan on the hot side of the peltier.

Is there a "circuit board somewhere in the vicinity? If so, the heat cycles may have cracked the soldering which causes the solder to separate when heated.
I had an '89 740 that had a hot start problem (well documented on the RWD forum) which among other things, was related to solder cracking on the fuel injection relay. The fix was to re-solder the circuit board or buy a new part, fortunately the part was $45.
Could there be a correlation if there is a circuit board in the heat of things?

Veeeery interesting! How long has it been since you did the "mods"? Is this in lieu of the dreaded 1-1.2K $$ repair?

yes very interesting. Hows about installing a nice large 12vdc fan facing the
ets unit. Larger gasket will keep heat transfer from block ets, and adding a
nice heat sink is a great idea. Have a V70, 1999, it has warranty unti 100K miles
      or 70 months.
Please keep us posted, its something a 3rd pary person could come up with a
      reasonably priced kit.
      cheers
