AC compressor noise 850 1996

Hi All,

Today my 96 850 NA began making a bad noise with the AC compressor running (goes away instantly if I shut off AC manually). It's a grinding noise which led me to believe a bearing is going out. Is the compressor serviceable or am I looking at a replacement? Any idea of cost?
Could it be another bearing that starts making the noise when the tension in the serpentine belt goes up due to increased load of AC compressor?
Other info: Serpentine belt is old and needs replacement. Had evap replaced and system recharged two years ago. Has been working great since.
Any input is greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Johan Modig

Could the system be low on PAG 100 oil ? When they replaced the evaporator I wonder if they added any PAG oil to the system? Do you see any traces of oil from the compressor area if you look down there with a flashlight? Is the compressor clutch wobbling? A new compessor isn't all that expensive but the labor to swap it out and recharge the system will be. But if it fails and sends debris all through the system that will trash everything. Have it checked out by an A/C shop.

Mike

Hi Mike and thanks for your reply.
I'll check according to your ideas. Evap was changed at Volvo where I live so hopefully they knew what they were doing.
I talked to a shop and they were willing to have a looka at it and also noted that I should switch the comp off to avoid debris being pushed through the system.

Cheers Johan
