O2 sensor issues...please help!!! 850

I have a 1995 850 GLT (non-turbo) and had both O2 sensors replaced last year (both were dead) right after having a new (aftermarket) catalytic converter installed.
A few weeks ago check engine light came on again.
Car repair shop checked it with OBD II and told me it’s a dead rear O2 sensor. They don’t want to replace it anymore because they have no idea what causes the sensor to die and told me to go to a Volvo dealer. NOW THAT IS AN EXPENSIVE TRIP
So I want to order sensor from ipd and install myself but do I risk a broken O2 sensor within the year again….anybody knows what could have caused it????? (ps. There are no airleakes in the cat converter)…
Please help!!!

Do you know which O2 sensor codes are being set? The details of codes and why they might occur are on Bay13. The front and rear codes can be linked.

A long shot: in my 95 850GLT I once hit a large rock and ripped the shield under the catalyst partway off - it tugged at the sensor wiring. Has any of your undercar wiring to the sensors gotten damaged somehow?

What part number O2 sensor did they install the first time? It should be a Bosch 15062. If it's not you can pick one up at FCPGroton.com (http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo850oxygensensors.htm) or Auto Parts Authority ( http://www.autopartsauthority.com/oxygen/volvo~1996~850~glt~parts.html ) for about $120 and install it yourself in 10 minutes.

Couple other things on O2 sensors. Some vendors have a chart with the wrong part # for some 850 sensors. Just went thru this fiasco. Double check the # to make sure it is right. Also, inside the sensor nose is a ceramic tip that is VERRRY fragile. Treat it like glass. Any significant shock like dropping it will probably destroy it. Also, the new sensor will have a gray anti seize paste on the threads. Be very careful not to transfer any of this to the sensor nose on your fingers when installing it.
