how does one reset the check engine light without going to the dealer? is it possible.

The cheap way out is to simply disconnect the positive terminal from the car battery for about 10 minutes. It will require you to enter the radio security code and re-enter your radio station presets. Might want to jot that information down first. If the light trips on again, you need to have the code checked with a ODB-reader per the other replies. Good luck.

You need an OBD-2 code reader which is necessary to read why the CEL is on to begin with and then reset it. You can find them for about $30. on up to ~$200. You'll get a lot of opinions on the board as to which ones work best.
