Ignition swich problem (suspect) V70-XC70 1998

I'm having a problem with my ignition switch in my V70 (1998). Today I went to start the car and it would go to position 3 and then nothing would happen when I tried to start it. I did this a couple of times just to ensure I wasn't doing something wrong, but nothing. Then I took the key out, and turned the steering wheel a little to lock it. When I put the key back in, if there was any tension on the wheel from the locked wheel, the key would just rotate in a circle, not catching on anything to move into position I, II, or III. As soon as I took the tension off the wheel, it would then go to the other positions. After trying this twice it started. But why is my key just spinning with the steering wheel lock activated and also what suggestions does everyone have about it not starting when I turned the key all the way? The only other thing I could hear that sounded a little odd was a solonoid type noice from the passenger side of the car. I don't quite know how to explain that one, or when it happens, but noticed it when I turn off the car. Maybe the shift lock solonoid?? Who knows....

Thanks in advance.

The mechanical portion of the ignition switch is most likely the issue here. A replacement that matches your key can be purchased throug the dealership for about $120 U.S. and they will charge you about 1.5 hours labor at whatever their going rate is. I've heard of others paying $250 or so for the part and labor. If you feel like doing it yourself, it is not too bad of a job. Let me know and I can send you some instructions.

I had the exact same problem and ended up paying almost 400 to have the thing replaced. In fact that was the last straw and I sold my car shortly after I replaced the switch. I would advise attempting to do it yourself the as labor cost was very high.

        Mike,

Sorry to hear that you could no longer bear the problems, and some vehicles do have many (all makes). Best of luck with your next/current vehicle.
