Leather Shift Boot for 5spd 850 1994

The shift boot on my 5spd detached from the plastic part of the center console, and a previous gluing attempt was unsuccesful. A dealership said that he would have to cut the entire shifter off to replace the boot. Is there any way around this? Or should I just live with it?
