loss of power and black smoke ! 850

I have a 94 855T with 144K on it. About a month ago it started to lose power when on the highway. It was not a huge deal it just felt strange.
Last weekend i cleaned the trottle body and egr. Ever thing was great after that, Or so i thought.
Yesterday I pulled out of the toll booth the car shifted out of 1st into 2nd and lost all power. I kept my foot on the gas and could see black smoke and a big truck in the mirror. Then it just took off.
Its better if i am real lite footed, thats hard for me.
The car had a tune up at 120K new plugs, cap, rotor, fuel filter.
any help would be great. Thanks

    Hi,
I didn't see plug wires on your list of tune up parts. The wires should certainly been replaced once already, and may be due again. Don't ignore the coil wire either. It works five times as hard as the rest of them.

    Good luck,
    Mark

24K miles on a tune up; why wait for an extra 5K? It's time for a tune up. Check your codes, it's easy to do. That big truck thought you must have been a turbo diesel :)

Possibly an O2 sensor going south. As they fail, your mileage and power will fall off and it'll run rich enough to blow black smoke. Eventually your CEL will come on. Another possibility is a vacuum leak that will fool the ECU into enriching the mixture with power loss and black smoke. Check Bay 13 for troubleshooting vacuum leaks. There are several common sites they occur on the 850.
