95 850 GLT - What to look for when buying used? 850

I'm a 240 guy myself, but i'm looking at a 95 850 GLT Wagon. (asking $4995) The body, interior and everything is in great shape and it has 142,000 miles on it. Non-turbo. Are there any common problems i should look for or anything that i should pay close attention to when i give it a test drive this weekend? It cranked right up when i looked at it the other day, no smoking and all the windows etc works. Any help is appreciated.

    95 850 GLT - Decided to pass... 850

Yeah, after digging around on this site and looking at the car again we decided to pass on it. I looked thru the manuals and no records were recorded recently so i felt it was too much of a risk. We did however drive a 2002 VW Passat Wagon 1.8 turbo and was very impressed... the price was a little too high for me. I think i'm just gonna dump some money in my 240 and roll on. Thanks for the replys

After my experiences w/ my '95 and reading alot of these entrys in brickboard I would suggest giving the 850's a PASS. I think Volvo missed the mark with this one although with all cars it depends alot on what the previous owner has done....or not done.

Check kbb.com when I did, for private party it said $4250. I also like to look at dealer trade in price and figure that is a good place to start barganing.
Stormn' is correct. Check for oil leaks at rear main (driver's side) and ask for service records. No records, no sale.

Search the forum for common trouble spots. They include: AC and tranny. Both are a function of previous owner maintenance or the lack of.

Have the car inspected by an independent mechanic familar with Volvos. Expect to pay $50 to 100 for this service. Money very well spent. Depending on previous owners, could be heaven or the alternative.

Awful lotta miles for the money, or so it seems to me.
