Rear clunk - Nivomats or not? 850 1996

Hello all; it's been a long time. I have the 'clunk' coming from the back. Was going to go ahead & order shock mounts. Several questions:
1.) I have a wagon - what do I do, pull the carpeting & stuff & access the area from the inside of the hatch?
2.) What's a Nivomat type shock, and how will I know for certain if that's what I have?
3.) Is this job a PITA (pain in . ..) , or fairly easy?

As always, thanks for your replies.

Clunks in the rear can also be caused by a detached spring bump. Hate to see you spend $140 when a couple of dollars can fix the noise.

I've got a 97 R wagon and it came stock with the Nivomats. I think they were an option on the other models. The Nivomat shock itself is something like $250 if you need to replace it. I have a similar thing happening right now in my car and I'm looking to do the fix.

A question for the folks out there: is there a diference in the dissasembly procedure of a Nivomat setup from the normal shocks as described in the previous replies to this post?

Thanks,

Kyle

Nivomats are an automatic load leveling option.

Assuming you don't have them - remove the 3rd seat if you have one, fold the 2nd seat forward, and pry up the floor panels at each side. If I remember correctly they are held also by a couple of screws. You will be able to see the upper shock mounts and see which (if not both) has split. The only problem I had with this is removing the nut from the top end of the shock, which was somewhat frozen. I had to grip the end of the shaft with a grip pliers along the flats to keep the shock from turning. Part was about $38. I once paid a guy to do one, $75 including part.

I went to indy. Was $140.00 for both shock mounts parts and labor. Also replaced shocks for $100 each since it was already apart. Shock mounts are worth every penny to get rid of clunking noise.
