98 V70 Air Pump / EGR V70-XC70

I have a N.A., 2.5 liter, 98 V70 (purchased in June of 97), and I am trying to determine whether it has an air pump and EGR valve. According to "Ray J", it should have an SAS valve near the center of the firewall, but it doesn't. I confess that i have not removed the battery to look beneath for the air pump. Could mine be laid out different than some others? Is there anything else, piping, etc. that might indicate its existence short of removing the battery?

Also, per Bay 13, I cleaned the throttle body recently but found no sign of an EGR valve attached to it. Also couldn't find the 22mm nut mentioned. Could it be in a different location?

thanks for any info,
kcarl in N.C.

I thought all 1998 V70's had a SAS valve and air pump. I thought 1998 was the last year. I have the B5254T engine. (Volvo lists it as a 2.4L but some places list it as a 2.5L.)

...p.s. You don't need to remove the battery to see the air pump. If you look up from the ground under the battery, you can see it (if it's there).

1998 V70's do not use EGR. I believe 1997 850 was the last year with an EGR system. I think all 1998 V70's do have an SAS system. You can check the data plate under the hood to see what systems are in place that affect emissions. For example, my 1998 V70 T5 lists:
- SFI sequential fuel injection
- TC turbocharger
- CAC charge air cooler (intercooler)
- H02S(2) 2 heated oxygen sensors
- TWC three way catalytic converter
- AIR secondary air injection system

If you're not the original owner, it's conceivable (but unlikely)that the SAS system was removed by previous owner. Check out the air pump replacement writeup on bay13 (volvospeed.com) for pictures to see what the SAS components look like and where they are located.

It looks like I don't have an air pump or EGR. The plate listed:

- SFI sequential fuel injection
- H02S(2) 2 heated oxygen sensors
- TWC three way catalytic converter

Wow! That's good news I hope. I should have been suspicious of the EGR when the gasket kit for it included 2 bolts and a blanking plate.

Thanks so much for the responses from everyone.

you probably don't have a EGR and no air pump.

If there is an air pump, there will be an SAS valve at the back of the engine by the firewall, and there will be a hose coming from this valve to the air pump under the battery tray.
