blowing smoke & pcv full of oil - what's that cause? 850 1995

Faithful oil/filter changes per schedule by Volvo auth. retailer (and double the schedule in winter months) and at 214k km she's burning oil. Down 1/2 litre on about 4000km, but the situation seems to be worsening.

Quick look by a former dealer revealed a pcv system full of oil and burned oil residue lining the intake manifold. Concluded "probable blow-by from piston rings". Maybe the current burn rate isn't much of a worry but what about a pcv full of oil? They cleaned it up, popped in a new flame trap and gestured toward the new car showroom. Promised to deliver some ballpark estimates on ring jobs, valve jobs, rebuilt engine, etc.

Any wagers on what the cause is? Best case? Worst case? Lots of head-removal-requiring-problems (valves, rings, etc) covered in previous posts here. Not sure yet if I'll take it to an indie or a Volvo dealer for detailed diagnosis/ repair estimate. Maybe to Volvo for diagnosis and to both for repair estimate.

Still great to drive and almost always the best looking car in the lot.

    progress report... 850 1995

I called up the garage to ask about a compression check and the tech convinced me to first get an accurate measure of the oil comsumption before paying money to dig around. As some of you posted, the flame trap replacement may solve the problem (fingers crossed!)

Since the flame trap replacement, no noticeable smoke on startup but I still am getting some kind of burning odour coming from either the exhaust or underneath the car. Not sure if it's oil burning or if it has something to do with a recent exhaust manifold and muffler replacement. We'll find out.

So it'll be a little while before I have the oil burn measure but I'll keep posting the progress.

Thanks for your replies - they're a huge help.

    Hi wagoneer,

I'm agree with Matt: have a compression test done before going any further

I'm having the same problem with wifes '95 850 --> 198K on the clock she's burning oil at the rate of 1/2 liter per 3,800-4,000 Km, also blue smoke is visible on start-up wich means of a strong possibility of worns valve seals not the pistons rings and it might be the main problem according to my mechanic.

I'm scheduled next week for a compression test on mine and I'll let you know

    Hi

With that mileage you oil consumption is too bad!

To determine wear in the cylinders have your Volvo technician perform a compression test. If you ask for a copy of the results please post them on this site as there are some excellent mechanics who WILL give you an honest report.

This will show the real state of your motor.

You might just have a blocked engine breather (under the inlet manifold), replacing this is a lot cheaper than new rings and valves. Will give you a few more thousands of kilometres.

are you getting noticable blue smoke coming out? Or is that what they are telling you at the dealer? 1/2L on 4k is pretty good. I think you should just keep an eye on things for the next 4k and see if the flametrap is full of oil again and if the start burning alot of oil. How old was that flametrap?

yes blue smoke; flametrap probably original 850 1995

Blue smoke is visible on occasional start-up. Otherwise can't see any in the rear view. I'll have to get a friend to tail me one day and observe.

I'm not aware of the flame trap being changed yet. Can't remember if it's on Volvo's regular service schedule.

Do Flame trap ASAP 850 1995

With luck just the flame trap problem. 850s have flame trap instead of PVC valve. Should be changed about every 30k miles, althought mine has been know to get a little clogged after 20k and I'm pretty good about changing oil & filter.

When clogged crankcase pressure builds up and has to go somewhere, with luck, now that pressure is relieved the oil will stop leaking and there is no long lasting damage. Had a friend who was telling me about server oil leaks in his 740. Replaced flame trap and leaks gone.

Also, gasket on oil filler cap is commonly needs replacement if you find oil near there.
