Injector Test V70-XC70 1998

How do you test if an injector is bad? My wife 98 XC is getting very hard to start and is puffing smoke when it does start up. The problem started out intermittent and has become almost a constant. I have had the engine 'moto-vaced' and have replaced the fuel filter. The problem got marginally better after the vac and filter, but not all the way there and is not getting bad again. The car is acting like it flooded when you try and start it so I am thinking I have a bad injector that is flooding the engine ??.

On a side note, I checked the codes last weekend and came up with a P0116 - Engine Coolant sensor. I will replace the sensor and t-stat this weekend, but I don't think the two things are related since it starting having problems before the CEL came on.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Kevin

Temp sensor rarely rarely goes bad V70-XC70 1998

I have a 1983 BMW and the temp sesnor for the Motronic by Bosch is still original.

The problem is most likely in the CONNECTOR. Very often the connection goes bad (road salt in winter, corrosion),....so disconnect the Connector to temp sensor and give it a good clean, spray some WD-40 to both the sensor itself and the connector and reconnect.

    This should solve the problem.

I change my Thermostat every 60K so if yours is due then do it but do not expect changing the Tsat to solve this problem.

let us know how it works out.

    Injector Test V70-XC70 1998

    hi,
do the sensor first as the two problems could very well be related and its an easy thing to replace. just beacuse the problems existed before the cel came on does not mean that there was no problem with the sensor prior to that, the light only comes on when certain problems become bad enough but they still can post a dtc code without the cel on.
plus a faulty ect sensor could make the car run excessively rich causing your problems.

    steve.

T-stat and sensor have been changed. No CEL anymore and less smoke on start-up, but the car still is not starting well. I still think I might have a bad injector but don't know how to test them. Any one know how?
      Thanks,
      Kevin

With the engine running, place the blade of a long screwdriver against the body of the injector, and place your ear on the handle (take care not engage any rotating devices). You should hear a rapid clicking sound. Check each injector in turn. If there is no sound coming from an injector, temporarily switch the wiring with an adjacent injector (this may not be possible on later engines), and retest. If the injector starts clicking, the wiring is at fault (it may be only that the contacts need cleaning). If all injectors click, but one has a somewhat muffled sound, it could be partially clogged, or have a foreign object lodged inside, which can prevent it from closing fully.
