this is news to me. is it for all years? I dont have a gas smell or any leaks that I've noticed. the only thing I did noticed is that gas level drops rapidly after a fill up. I think its the gauge because i get half decent mileage for a turbo. i'll still call my dealer to find out.

even if you dont have a leak they will install some spacers between the tank and heat shield to prevent it hitting.

I just called my local dealer and they said "there has never been a recall on 850 fuel tanks" What the heck is going on? I have a 95 with a problem of smelling like gas when the tank is full. She said she has been with Volvo service for 20 years. Does anyone have any documentation or a link?

There is a recall, however it is in its early stages so who knows what kind of responses you'll get at the local shop. If you call the national number for Volvo, your problem will be addressed properly with no waiting or BS. Volvo is paranoid of a lawsuit. I had to have my tank replaced about a month ago and it was done under the recall, they said I was the 17th person in the country to have the tank replaced so it is probably not super-common as of yet. When they had my tank down they mentioned my fuel pump was leaking at the top of the tank. I told them to ignore it and do the recall only. It seems to be quite common to find the rubber/glue material that surrounds the power wires going into the tank for the pump/sending unit deteriorated and allowing gas to leak. This should only happen when the tank is brim-full. If it has the recall related leak (if similar to my experience) it will likely leak down to the point where the tank is about 1/3 filled.

FYI, the simple fix is to fill in the area around the leaky wires with some tough epoxy. The fuel pump is $400, the epoxy about $5. You make the call.

I called my local Volvo dealer's service desk to ask about the fuel tank recall. I gave her my Vin number and she looked it up online with Volvo and told me that mine was part of the fuel tank recall. They said I should be receiving a letter within the next month or so. She wasn't familiar with it but found out when she looked it up for me. They have been staggering the notices so that there isn't an overload in the replacements all at one time.

About a year or more ago I had the fuel tank leak. Especially when it was filled too full and also when the tank was low. I had a guy make a hose part out of some sort of mesh that took care of it. Every now and then I think I smell fuel but not like before. I will take advantage of the replacement.

Maybe the ones in your area aren't part of the recall. I am in FL.
Or maybe your dealer's info is not very reliable.

I called Volvo customer service a few weeks back and they verified my VIN as affected. Said a letter should be going out to me by Nov and that I should make an appt after receiving the letter. Turns out my headlight switch is under recall as well.

I received one. We have a '96 850 and we live in a southeastern state, where the issue is getting priority.

ANyone know how I can update my contact info as the owner of the car I bought used? if a recall is sent out I would never get it because I bought the car 2 years ago used. I don't have any gas smell but do we have to wait until the problem occurs to get it replaced?

when I went to my volvo dealer I gave them the vin no# of my car and they put it in with my name and adress. so volvo can send recall notices, I got one when the seat heaters were recalled.

I live in jersey anywhere near there?

I just got my free tank last week for my 94 850 and am in SW Ohio. My guess is it not just southern cars with the problem. Did not have to pay a dime for the new tank, but a $70 tow was not covered. Symptoms included a slight smell of gas for a long time, then after a partial fill-up one night, it started a major leak, rendering the car undriveable.

And I have not recieved any recall letter for my 94 850 or my 93 850. I have been watching the 93 to see if it develops similar symptoms!

i have this problem and i live in canada. i cant fill my tank up fully because it leaks like a bastard from somewhere uptop the tank. i smell gas when this happens
from inside the cab.
