850 filter wrench 850

I need another type wrench to remove the fiter on a 96 850. I have a "band" type that semi works but is a royal pain on the recessed filter. Will something similiar to this one that has a 20 deg bend in the handles work:

Any other ideas appreciated as always

Many thanks in advance!

And I use my wife's jar opener. You know, the round piece of rubberized plastic sheet. I just clean off the filter, put the plastic/rubber cloth over the end and turn. Easy. Especially with my size 15 hands.

Great idea Klaus. Never woulda thought of that but my wife would pitch a fit if she caught me with any of her kitchen "utensils" being put to practical use out in my shop. Took me forever to get all the power steering fluid outa her turkey baster after I changed that. Also, those magnifier "make up" mirrors they use work great for inspection mirrors to see into those recesses. Hardest part is finding it among all the crap she carries in her purse.

Thanks guys! I have the ratchet "cup" type that fits Purolator filters and a three jaw type (also fits a ratchet) that tightens on the filter as you apply torque to loosen it. As I switched to Mann filters that are smooth, the cup type doesn't work at all and the three jaw type works but it usually takes a half dozen tries and a lot of swearing before it will grip the smooth sides. I put them on hand tight but they some how manage to tighten themselves further. Figured there had to be somethin' better.

I also use the 3 jaws type wrench from Snap On. It works perfect and greps without any slipping. I usually hand tight the filter and then use the 3 jaws wrench to tighten it a little bit more, that is it.

I have the type that is like a cap that fits over the end of the filter. It also has a 3/8 drive square in it so you can use it with an extension and/or rachet. There are like two sizes of these things to fit various dia. of filters. Anyway, can't recall where I got it, but it was an AutoZone or similiar.

    Cheers,

    Bill

The one I like the best fits over the filter and uses a 3/8 rachet with an extension ,works great as long as you use filters that will accept the socket.
I use puralator filters and going on 240,000 miles . so they work for me.

You shouldn't need a wrench to get your filter off. Who put it on that tight? It should be at most hand tight, 3/4 turn past snug. I always take off my filters by hand.

The reason I do it this way: The instructions tell you too.

You shouldn't need a wrench to get an oil filter off but in the real world most of us do even if one installs the filter correctly, hand tight as most of us also do. You also shouldn't need a wrench to take off a sink trap nut that was installed hand tight but you usually do. The poster was asking for info, not a sarcastic lecture.

I have used the earlier version of this wrench that doesn't have the slip-joint for several years now. Works great on the 850 and somewhat on the 240.
