How does one check fluid level for 5-speed automatic transmisson(AW5) ??Uses 'Special' Oil?? S70

Just wanted to know firstly, how one can check the fluid level on a 2000 S70 with 5-speed automatic transmission, as I can't seem to find a dipstick location? Secondly, why does the 5-speed auto(AW5) use a special Volvo gearbox oil, while the 4-speed auto(AW4) uses regular Dexron III/Mercon transmission fluid? Do I need to purchase the special gearbox oil from a dealer for my 5-speed auto, or is there a substitute for it?

Thanks in advance......

The dipstick is below the oil dipstick , in a very awkward place. Easier to see it from under the car.

It is not a regularly-checked level. Manufacturer found more issues with the introduction of debris from people checking level a bigger issue than changes in level.

Only Volvo syn oil to be used. OUCH! expensive - but I know of no reputatble party will to stick their neck out and warranty a substitute.

Thanks for providing me with the location, as I'm having a difficult time sourcing a manual for my 2000 S70SE, as it appears the only manuals readily available are for years upto 1998. Anyways, I again thank you for the info and yes your right about the price for that "special" oil, as my local dealer sells a quart for $21.60.
