Trip computer accuracy 850

For any new 850 owners, just wanted to pass on to you that you shouldn't take the trip computer's estimate of miles remaining in the tank as gospel. Mine showed 30 and it ran out of gas. Of course it was dumb to let it run down that low, but I'm glad I learned my lesson in the city rather than on some deserted highway!

Now the check engine light is on, which I understand should turn itself off after a few starts and stops, or a couple of days.

Thanks for the tips on the check engine light. (By the way, my car is a 97.) I was going to bring the car to the dealer to have the check engine light reset, but they said I should instead wait a few days and see if the light will go off by itself--otherwise, they charge $$$ to check out the problem. We'll see what happens.

A little additional info--a minute before the car stopped, it was very sluggish, barely accelerating while I was on a flat highway. When I got off the highway I had to go up a hill, and then the car finally conked out. Perhaps I could've gone a bit farther if I hadn't hit the hill, but the way the car was dragging on highway, I'm guessing it didn't have much juice left.

That is interesting, one of the things that they impressed upon us in the New Car Product class when the 850 came out ('93) was the dead nuts accuracy of their trip meters. Of course all of the instructors and reps were driving them at the time and they atested to the fact that they had thoroughly tried them out and that in fact they were pretty much down to a nat's ass. Now the check engine light, if the car is late enough and it is running OBDII software it will in fact shut that light off but we are talking a loooooong time. OBDII software dictates that two complete drive cycles with out the problem reoccuring will cause the light to go out and leave the code in the computer as a pending code for something like the next 40 cycles or so. It has been my experience that it can take a loooong time to get that light to go out by itself. If you ran it out of gas then I have no doubt that you have some missfire codes, among other things, in there.

May be you need a new trip computer. Mine goes regularly down to 10 miles and once it went to 0, I continued driving for about 10 miles (I was on a highway), and when I filled it up, it needed 17.5 gallons (which means it still had a safety margin of about 40 miles or so.

For the check engine light, see the previous response.

Wow! I regularly run mine down to 30 and add 17 gallons to fill it up. Guess I should do it when I hit 50.

The service engine light will turn off after 2 minutes of running, every time you start the car. The check engine light needs to have the trouble codes reset, or it will be on forever. Unless someone knows something I don't know (which are a lot of people on this board).
