Still pulls to the right after 3 alignments - what's wrong?! S70 1999

Ever since I bought it a few months ago my S70 has pulled to the right on a straight road, ever so slightly.

The problem increased when I moved from 195/60R15s to 205/50R16s.

I had the car aligned a total of three times by the Volvo dealership. They subcontracted this work twice to a specialist that they have been using for years, and a third time to a body shop who they tell me has very elaborate alignment system which they use when cars have been repaired after an accident. I have been happy with my dealer up to now and have no reason to doubt the qualifications of their subcontractors.

Any suggestions?

TIA,

Has the car been in a wreck? If you bought it from the dealer, they certainly have the records, if not run a carfax report. The body shop should have been able to tell also, but if you don't ask, they may not be forthcoming.

Contact Hunter Engineering in St. Louis and find out if they have a training center near you or if there is a shop in your area using one of their four wheel alignment systems. They should be able to give you the straight story.

Are you sure that one of the brake calipers is not hanging up on the right side. Check the wheel temperature after a short run with moderate braking. left and right sides should feel the same.

Good Luck,

Dan

Bent wheels?

Thanks for the idea Jeff, but I'm afraid not. I bought the car with 15" steel wheels and upgraded to 16" steel wheels. It seems to pull a bit more with the 16" wheels, but that makes sense since they are wider (205 instead of 195).

Still wondering what it could be so please keep those ideas coming!

Try driving on the wrong side of the road and see if it pulls left. The crown can throw you off, eh? Car wants to go downhill...

Thanks Mittenhed,

I've been wondering about that. The pulling (also) happens on the highway, which is fairly flat, though I should add that when the highway seems to incline to the left, the car ever so slightly pulls to the left. I wish I could try another S70 to see if they all do that. I drove an S40 last week (dealer's lender - rather nice car to drive BTW) which did not pull on the same roads.

Do all S70s tend to drift to the right on highways?

I am having the same problem after I upgraded my 15 to 17s. Not sure if it was caused by the tire blowout or not. (That is why I switched from 15 to 17, one of the steel rims is bent.)
